Areas of Study
The Music Department of Sir William Mulock Secondary School opens its doors to students who would like to focus on one of three performance areas of study.
Instrumental Music - Band: students learn to play a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument
Instrumental Music - Guitar: students learn to play the guitar
Vocal Music - Students learn to excel at the art of singing
All music courses are performance oriented; however, all practical work is complemented by the study of theory and music history as well as exercises in listening and analysis.
Ensembles
All music students are also strongly encouraged to participate in Sir William Mulock's co-curricular music programme where students perform in one of three large ensembles: Wind Ensemble, Concert Band or Concert Choir. Participation in these ensembles allows students the opportunity to perform at annual concerts (Winter Showcase, Spring Serenade), music festivals (Toronto Kiwanis, Music Alive, Canada's Wonderland) and on extended field trips (Montreal, Cleveland, Boston).
Students enrolled in Music Repertoire also have the opportunity to expand their musical learning experiences to other venues. Students have chosen to take part in ensembles that explore the areas of big band jazz, vocal jazz, chamber music and musical theatre.
Community Partnerships
The music department has also been known to reach out to our elementary school partners as well as the community of Newmarket at large. Annual activities together with our elementary school partners have included concert tour performances at the schools as well as a large joint concert that has become known as Music at Mulock - A Family of Schools. Community events include Music on the Move and concerts given at senior citizens' homes.
Working together with and for our music students are two associations that meet regularly to become involved with and promote music education at Sir William Mulock S.S. The Music Council (composed of an executive of music students) works together to encourage school spirit through music. Our Music Parents Association is made up of interested parents who would like to get involved in the music department, to promote activities and to work together with the music department.
