FAMILY STUDIES
Courses in Family Studies help prepare students for a successful life. Family Studies courses are offered in all grades to both male and female students. The courses are open (O) or college/university (M) level, in the senior grades.
In Grade 9, students take Individuals and Family Living. This is a survey course of the central features of all the other Family Studies courses offered. Students in the Grade 9 course learn proper nutrition for adolescents, how to deal with peer and family relationships, make fashion choices, develop decision and problem-solving skills, improve communication skills and other life skills. There are many hands-on activities.
Grade 10 offers a Food and Nutrition course where students study healthy eating habits following Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating. There are many food labs where students cook and eat what they prepare.
In Grade 11, students can choose from the following: Fashion and Creative Expression; Introduction to Anthropology; Psychology and Sociology; Parenting; and Living and Working with Children. All these courses combine both theory and practice.
The Grade 12 courses are: Issues in Human Growth and Development; Families Living in a Diverse Society; and Food and Nutrition Science. These courses provide background for university and college courses in both the arts and sciences. Students will be introduced to research and critical thinking skills necessary for successful adult living and post-secondary education.
